    Bright Spots

    Bright spots have been widely used in the oil and gas industry over the past three decades as a direct hydrocarbon indicator to identify the presence of hydrocarbons in sedimentary layers. They usually appear as high amplitude anomalies in seismic data. These anomalies are not always due to hydrocarbon existence. They can also occur when there is a lithology contrast.

    In the seismic section below from Taranaki basin, a strong amplitude is observed at around 1.8s. To better describe this anomaly, we have mapped it using OpendTect inversion + tracker. This tracker combines amplitude tracking and tracking from seismic dips.

    By using the OpendTect platform, which encompasses the industry’s most advanced seismic attribute engine, interpreters can validate and identify any geological features in their data using the attribute set window. This window contains a set of seismic attributes definitions where users can evaluate and compute on sections and horizons. An example of this is the sweetness attribute, which is mathematically defined as the reflection amplitude divided by the frequency. This attribute is utilized to indicate the brighter amplitude in the seismic data to emphasize it from the background signature and to define the lateral boundaries of the reservoir.

    This example demonstrates the importance of seismic attributes in helping geoscientists toward a better understanding of these high amplitude anomalies, whether they delineate potential hydrocarbon traps or highlight a variation in lithology.
