Fault Plane Extraction Tool as a TFL Filter
Fault Likelihood volumes are often noisy and include all kinds of discontinuities in the input seismic volume that do not necessarily belong to a Geological Fault. The Fault Extraction Tool in OpendTect can solve this problem by eliminating all the noise that cannot be extracted as Fault Surfaces. In OpendTect 6.6.3, one can save the extracted Fault surfaces as a TFL volume that would contain only the spatially continuous discontinuities and filter out the rest. Apart from controlling the Fault extraction parameters, one can also apply simultaneous filters on the size and orientation of the Fault surfaces.
Here is an example from the New Zealand data set. The original TFL as seen in the first image depicts some noise and perhaps unrealistic faults. Using the new filter, we were able to remove the artifacts and only keep the most prominent faults and save the planes as a new Thinned Fault likelihood volume.
