Fluid Contact Finder (FCF) : Detecting subtle hydrocarbon anomalies and marking fluid contacts
Determining fluid contacts is an essential step to estimate field reserves and plan for field development strategies. Petrophysicists normally use well logs to identify and mark oil/gas- water contacts. But with the advancement of seismic attributes, interpreters are now able to identify pore fluids contacts without requiring well log data.
OpendTect's Fluid Contact Finder or FCF makes it easy for geoscientists to detect subtle hydrocarbon related anomalies and pinpoint gas-oil, gas-water, and oil-water contacts on seismic data. The FCF concept is based on the power of stacking to enhance such anomolies. In a structure that is filled with hydrocarbons, all seismic traces which penetrate the reservoir at the same depth, will have identical hydrocarbon column lenght. That is to say, the hydrocarbon effect on the seismic for these traces will be similar.
The FCF plugin outputs 3D FCF volumes and 2D FCF profiles of traces stacked along contour lines. Fluid Contact Finder can be applied to pre-stack and post-stack seismic data. It also supports a unique option for enhancing 4D anomalies in 4D difference cubes.
The data set we see in this video is from Taranaki Basin, New Zealand. Energy and similarity attributes are utilized to highlight the anomaly on section and a horizon respectively. In order to assess the potential fluid anomaly and enhance the hydrocarbon versus the water bearing zone on the structure, a polygon is drawn around the anomaly and the area where we think the hydrocarbon and the water bearing exists.
In the FCF analysis window, we stacked the traces along the contour bins of the horizon of interest. The FCF display window shows a result of possible fluid contact located where we observe a significant change in the amplitude at the flank of the structure.
