Is this real, or is it an artifact? Did they pick the right velocities at this location? Can angle stacks or AVO attributes help me?
To understand what you see in the seismic image you are interpreting, you may need to go back to the pre-stack domain. This is why OpendTect supports pre-stack viewers, pre-stack processing options and pre-stack attributes in the free (open source) part of the system.
Pre-stack data is loaded as SEG-Y files without duplication. OpendTect scans the SEG-Y data to create a lookup table that it uses to access pre-stack gathers at any (2D or 3D) seismic location. Gathers can be pre-processed (mute, scaling, super-gathers, velocity correction, …) and displayed at any location in the 3D scene, or in a standalone pre-stack viewer (see slider). The attribute engine supports on-the-fly and batch processing of pre-stack attributes. Among others you can transform offsets into angles, create angle stacks, and compute AVO attributes (Intercept, Gradient and derivatives).
In the 3D scene of the slider, you see a line with a statistical attribute computed from NMO-corrected gathers that is co-rendered with the seismic data. The attribute is the “Average Pre-stack Dip”. This attribute reveals where NMO corrections are over-corrected (red) and under-corrected (blue).
