Seismic Facies Tracker: ' Thalweg' Tracker
Many of the world’s oil and gas reservoirs are found in channel environments. When these channels are filled with porous rocks, they become a crucial stratigraphic exploration target. Seismic attributes are routinely used to detect such geological features in seismic data. However, such subtle features can be easily overlooked in complicated geological settings.
OpendTect Pro comes with a nice tool to track seismic facies in seismic data. A facies tracker that allows interpreters to follow channels and associated margins from a single seed position.
Users can choose to track positive or negative amplitudes. This criteria allows to add the largest positive amplitude or the most negative amplitude of all candidate cells.
The seismic section below is from Taranaki basin where turbidite channel complexes range from a few hundred meters to hundreds of kilometers. The 3D bodies extracted in the second image are the result of tracking 50,000 cells from single seeds with a positive amplitude value. The results show the usefulness of the Thalweg tracker for unraveling the architecture of turbidite channel systems and to determine the extent of individual channels within each system.
