Stratal Slicing: High Resolution Images of Thin Sedimentary Layers
Stratal slicing technique has proven to be a valuable tool when it comes to extracting geomorphological and lithological information from seismic data. In addition to its short interpretive cycle time, one major benefit of the stratal slicing is the ability to create seismic displays of chronostratigraphic events with high stratigraphic resolution.
In OpendTect stratal slicing is supported in the structural domain using the 3D HorizonCube slider. It is also possible to stratal slice in the Wheeler transformed (flattened) domain.
Below is an example of a time slice versus a stratal slice in a dipping seismic reflector. Time slice in a dipped formation reveals more structural than stratigraphic features. On the other hand, the stratal slice clearly discloses a very astonishing stratigraphic pattern. If an interpreter uses a time slice to study the sequence stratigraphy of this event, he/she would see discontinuous meandering channels. On the contrary, geomorphological forms such meandering loops are well-imaged in the stratal slice without any structural interference.
