Thalweg Tracker + Sequence Stratigraphy Insights from the F3-Dataset
Our F3 demo survey may well be the most scrutinized 3D seismic dataset on the planet—yet it still reveals new geological stories as our interpretation technology advances.
Using OpendTect’s Thalweg Tracker, we visualized seismic sedimentation patterns within an event onlapping the FS8 sequence boundary. The Thalweg Tracker extracts geo-bodies by iteratively evaluating neighboring cells and adding only the best fitting candidates to the growing body—guided by the seed-point amplitude:
Positive seeds: selects the strongest positive amplitudes Negative seeds: selects the strongest negative amplitudes
By mapping the Iteration Attribute (growth history), we reconstruct paleo-sedimentation pathways.
Here, the sediments above FS8—originating from the Eridanos Delta (Miocene to early Pleistocene)—were redistributed by longshore currents within a transgressive systems tract. The extracted features are interpreted as sand waves climbing the slope as anti-dunes.
What’s striking is how closely these paleo-architectures resemble modern analogue systems along the Dutch North Sea coast. Today, the Netherlands experiences both transgression and regression, driven by sea-level rise, subsidence, and highly dynamic longshore sediment transport.
Even after decades of study, the F3-Demo continues to teach us more—with the right tools.
